Fooducate yourself!

The Fooducate app makes it really easy for you to make healthy food choices.

Fooducate has a database of over 200,000 products which you can look up by scanning a barcode with your iPhone, entering the barcode digits manually, or typing in the name of the product. When you find the product, it tells you how many calories are in each serving, product details, and a letter grade of the product that represents how healthy it is. It also gives you 5 better options than the food you looked up, and the option to compare it to another product. So if you’re like me and still trying to get up on your food education game, this is something that will help greatly.

Fooducate is not affiliated with food manufacturers or diet companies, so you can be sure that every food suggestion you get is one that is solely for the purpose of improving your health. They also reveal cleverly hidden product information like controversial food ingredients, excessive sugar, trans fats, that manufacturers don’t want you to know about.

This free app for iPod, iPad, and iPhone was disappointing to me only because I looked up my favorite cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds) and was POSITIVE it had received an A grade because of its low sugar and whole grain. It actually received a B-…*sob*. So, now I will be on the lookout for Kashi Oat Cereal in Honey Toasted Out, which beat out my beloved Honey Bunches with a grade of A-.
The downside to this app is that in only works with US products, and because I’m not living in the states right now, I am limited in what I can look up. But if you do live there or you eat a lot of American products, this won’t be a problem.

So, download this app today and get on the road to “fooducating” yourself.
